Maternal mortality data are generated through a complex iterative process. We will discuss each step of the process, including case identification, records abstraction, review, and synthesis. This includes an innovative framework for identifying levels of preventability and recommendations for intervention based on models of health equity. Finally, we will discuss how the data are synthesized to create strategies for prevention, and we will contextualize Colorado’s data in the national dialogue on maternal mortality prevention.
