There are 1.4 million transgender individuals in the United States, and the 2011 National Transgender Discrimination Survey found that 50% report having to teach their healthcare provider about transgender-specific health issues, which may include nutrition. The current state of nutritional assessment, treatment, and care of transgender patients is virtually nonexistent. The lack of guidelines and education presents a barrier to attaining optimal health for members of transgender community. We will discuss why there is a need for transgender-specific nutrition care guidelines to be established, and we will explore strategies public health organizations can implement to better serve the transgender individuals living in the populations they serve.
