Second Chance, an alternative to suspension program, was developed as a critical component to tobacco and nicotine use prevention and cessation in schools and the community. Non-punitive consequences to youth tobacco and nicotine use is part of a comprehensive approach to tobacco and nicotine prevention because they have shown to reduce youth use.  Second Chance takes a skills-based approach to help youth better understand their relationship with tobacco and nicotine in order to increase their knowledge and motivation to quit. E-cigarette use by youth is a significant health risk behavior: 27% of youth currently use e-cigarettes (Healthy Kids Colorado Survey 2017). In order to address this growing concern,  the Second Chance program was updated in February 2019 to include information about vaping and electronic nicotine devices.
